The story behind

Whenever You Need Somebody, according to DoReSol

The story of Whenever You Need Somebody is a fascinating example of how a song can have multiple lives. Originally, it was conceived for the voice of O'Chi Brown, released in November 1985. While it had a discreet run on the UK charts, reaching position 97, its impact surprised the music industry, according to Brown herself. The song had an interesting journey in the United States in 1986, where it climbed to the top spot on dance music charts, though it failed to enter the Billboard Hot 100 due to issues with physical copy distribution.

It was in 1987 when Whenever You Need Somebody found its best-known version. Following the overwhelming success of Never Gonna Give You Up, the production team Stock Aitken Waterman sought new material for Rick Astley. They decided to give this song another chance, and the result was a phenomenon. It became the centerpiece and second single from his debut album, Whenever You Need Somebody, which sold millions of copies. Astley's version resonated strongly in Europe, topping charts in seven countries. The music video, featuring scenes at Las Canteras beach and the Reina Isabel Hotel in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, added a visual touch to its popularity. In 2019, Astley revisited the song, releasing a reimagined version with a piano arrangement for his album The Best of Me.
