The story behind

Wave, according to DoReSol

The melody of Wave, known in Portuguese as Vou Te Contar, began as an instrumental piece on the self-titled album by Antônio Carlos Jobim, recorded in May and June 1967 at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey.

However, the version first heard by the public was the one sung by Lani Hall, with Sérgio Mendes and his group Brasil '66, included on their album Equinox, also from 1967. Later, Jobim himself wrote English lyrics for this composition, which were recorded by artists such as Frank Sinatra in 1969, appearing on his 1970 album Sinatra & Company, and also by Johnny Mathis on his album Close to You, from the same year.

The album Wave, released in 1967, was a milestone in Jobim’s career. It was recorded in the United States with the collaboration of American jazz musicians and featured arrangements and direction by Claus Ogerman. Among the instrumentalists who participated were trombonists like Jimmy Cleveland, flutist Jerome Richardson, and bassist Ron Carter, along with a string section. The album reached position 114 on the Billboard 200 and number 5 on the Jazz Albums chart. The iconic album cover, featuring a solarized image of a giraffe, was created by photographer Pete Turner, who captured the image in 1964 at Amboseli National Park without initially planning it. The song, in its original version, has a duration of 2 minutes and 55 seconds.
