The story behind
Walls, according to DoReSol
The song Walls by the Australian band Flowers, which later adopted the name Icehouse, was released in January 1981 and included on their debut album, Icehouse. This single reached number 20 on the Australian singles charts. Interestingly, it was also released in New Zealand with a different cover, just before the group changed its name to Icehouse. The song's lyrics are autobiographical, according to Iva Davies, reflecting a significant period of his life.
Musically, Walls stands out for its blend of rock and synthpop, creating a dense and textured sound that captures the listener's attention. The music video, directed by Trevor Hawkins, complements this immersive atmosphere. In a review by Cash Box magazine, it is mentioned how the band invites the listener to dive into their sonic world, starting with a pulsating rhythm that evolves into a powerful keyboard and guitar hook. The production was handled by Cameron Allan and Iva Davies, who are also the songwriters for all the tracks on the single. With a duration of 4:22, Walls becomes a key piece in understanding the band's early sound.
