The story behind
Walk On, according to DoReSol
The song Walk On by U2 stands out for its profound message and its connection to the struggle for freedom. It is a tribute to Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese activist who was under house arrest for years due to her defense of democracy. The creation of this piece was inspired by Suu Kyi's story, and although Bono, the vocalist, initially considered writing from the perspective of her family, he decided it was more appropriate to address the theme in a more abstract way. Thus, the lyrics become a reflection on personal sacrifice and the nobility of doing what is right, even when the heart suggests otherwise.
The recording of Walk On took place in 2000 in Dublin, and during the process, U2 considered splitting it into two songs, but ultimately decided to keep it as one. With the production of Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, the song took shape until it reached its final form. Despite producer Steve Lillywhite suggesting that the mix was not ideal, Bono insisted on continuing to work on it. This perseverance paid off, as Walk On not only became a hit, reaching number one on several charts, but also won the Grammy for Record of the Year in 2002, a milestone for the band. The lyrics conclude with a powerful message about what truly matters in life, emphasizing that love and relationships are the only things one can take with them, while material things must be left behind.
