The story behind

Waiting for Your Love, according to DoReSol

The first time I heard Waiting for Your Love, I was hooked by that rhythm that moves between softness and insistence, as if the song were breathing in two beats. It’s not just the bass that sets the pace, but that drumbeat that pulses with almost mechanical precision, while the keyboards weave layers of sound that feel warm yet urgent. Bobby Kimball, the vocalist, carries the melody with such naturalness that the track sounds more organic than one might expect at first glance, as if each note had been crafted to feel spontaneous.

The story behind this song is as compelling as its sound. Kimball revealed that he wrote it in the late '70s, when the band wasn’t yet complete, and originally titled it You Got Me in its early versions. The track remained a demo until years later, during the recording sessions for Toto IV in 1981, when David Paich and he finally finished the definitive structure. The result was a single that, though it never reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 (peaking at #73 in 1983), marked the end of an era for the band, as it was their last release with the original lineup. Recorded in Los Angeles with an engineering team that included names like Al Schmitt and Greg Ladanyi, the track blends soul, pop, and that funk touch that always defined Toto, proving why their sound was so hard to categorize. The exact duration—4:12 or 4:13 depending on the source—doesn’t detract from its energy, and that bassline that repeats insistently completes a song that, while not their biggest hit, remains a prime example of how to build a groove that never lets go.
