The story behind
Unforgettable, according to DoReSol
The song Unforgettable is a work that stands out for its emotive melody and the depth of its lyrics, written by Irving Gordon. Originally, the track was going to be called Uncomparable, but the editor decided that Unforgettable was a more suitable title. This piece was released in 1951 and is especially known for the performance of Nat King Cole, who recorded his version that same year, included on his album Unforgettable, released in 1952. The orchestration of the song was done by Nelson Riddle, which gave it a distinctive touch that resonates with listeners to this day.
The recording by Cole was made at Capitol Studios in Hollywood and became a jazz classic. In 1961, the artist re-recorded the song in a stereo version for the album The Nat King Cole Story, also with Riddle’s arrangement. An interesting aspect is that his daughter, Natalie Cole, began performing this song in her live shows during the 1980s. In 1991, a remix version was created that combined Nat’s voice with Natalie’s, reaching position 14 on the Hot 100 and number three on the Billboard Adult Contemporary. This collaboration had a major impact, earning three Grammy Awards in 1992, including Song of the Year and Record of the Year.
The magic of Unforgettable lies not only in its composition but also in the emotional connection it conveys. Nat King Cole’s performance, with his smooth and melodic voice, along with David Foster’s careful production in Natalie’s version, creates a bridge between generations, making this song remain relevant and moving. Cole’s original recording was recognized in the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2000, underscoring its enduring legacy in music.
