The story behind
The Man’s Too Strong, according to DoReSol
The song The Man’s Too Strong, with its 4:40 duration, is taken from the album Brothers in Arms, a work that marked a milestone for Dire Straits. This record, released in May 1985, was not only the first in history to surpass one million copies sold in CD format, but it also dominated the charts. It reached fourteen non-consecutive weeks at number one on the UK Albums Chart, ten of them consecutively between January and March 1986, and nine weeks leading the Billboard 200 in the United States, in addition to 34 weeks at the top of the Australian Albums Chart. The production of this album was handled by Mark Knopfler and Neil Dorfsman, who had already worked with the band in 1982 on Love over Gold and on Knopfler's 1983 soundtrack for Local Hero.
The recording of Brothers in Arms had an innovative component as it was one of the first albums to be recorded entirely in digital format. Its availability on the then-novel Compact Disc had a significant impact, making it a success among consumers adopting this new technology. This format also served as an excellent platform to appreciate the detailed production of Mark Knopfler, encouraging many fans to rediscover and acquire previous works by the band. In recording engineering was Neil Dorfsman, while the mixing was carried out by Dave Greenberg and Bruce Lampcov, with Mark Knopfler sharing the producer role alongside Dorfsman.
