The story behind

The Kids, according to DoReSol

The song The Kids by Jamiroquai, released as a single in Japan on December 12, 1993, addresses the theme of children's rights and social status in the world. Its composition is characterized by a high volume and a fast tempo, seeking to reflect the typical carefree nature of childhood. This piece, although recorded shortly after the sessions for the album Emergency on Planet Earth, is part of the band's second studio work, The Return of the Space Cowboy, released in 1994.

The original recording of The Kids featured Nick Van Gelder on drums. However, for the rest of the tracks on The Return of the Space Cowboy, it was re-recorded with Derrick McKenzie. Critics at the time highlighted its energy: David Stubbs of Melody Maker described it as "witty and cheeky, with a dizzying bass and a growling, lively effects box chasing itself." For his part, Roger Morton of NME noted that the song "is driven by some cool, dizzying wah wah guitars." Matt Hall of Select captured the intensity of the intro, where Jay Kay exclaims "Yeah, now we get rough!" before the band launches into a frenetic punk-funk exercise. Siân Pattenden of Smash Hits considered it, along with Space Cowboy, the highlight of the album.
