The story behind
The Captain of Her Heart, according to DoReSol
The song The Captain of Her Heart by Double begins with a piano that sounds like a whisper, almost as if it were coming from afar. It is not a track that hits hard at the start, but rather builds up calmly, as if telling a story it has known for a long time. The lyrics speak of someone who stops waiting for the person who never returns, and that contrast between the gentle melody and the melancholic lyrics is what makes it special. The saxophone, which appears later, adds an unexpected touch, as if someone were entering the room unannounced to remind you that, sometimes, things do not turn out the way one hopes.
The recording of The Captain of Her Heart was not planned. Keyboardist Felix Haug had jotted down a melody on his Oberheim synthesizer, but when Kurt Maloo heard it in the studio, he preferred to record it on piano instead of keeping the synthetic sound. What’s curious is that this improvised version remained as-is, without adjustments, and ended up being the heart of the song. Maloo wrote the lyrics in minutes, almost as if the words were already there, waiting. The track reached the top positions in the United Kingdom and the United States, something rare for a Swiss group, and to this day remains their only major hit. The original video, filmed in Switzerland, plays with the idea of duplicating the musicians on screen, as if they were two versions of themselves playing at the same time.
