The story behind
What makes Take Five so particular, and what surely attracted you to want to play it, is its rhythm. It's not the 4/4 time signature we usually hear in most music. Here, the pulse is felt in groups of five, a 5/4 that gives it that feeling of constant and slightly unexpected movement. This rhythmic signature, which gives the piece its name, was one of the boldest ideas on the album Time Out. The saxophone, with its so catchy and recognizable melody, glides over this foundation, creating an atmosphere that, for its time, was quite novel in jazz.
This piece was born in 1959, as part of the album Time Out by the Dave Brubeck Quartet. They recorded it in the 30th Street studios of Columbia Records in New York City, in sessions that extended through June and July, and then in August. The quartet, in its best-known lineup, was composed of Dave Brubeck on piano, Paul Desmond on saxophone, Joe Morello on drums, and Eugene Wright on bass. Time Out was an album that dared to explore uncommon time signatures, and Take Five became its most prominent track, even charting on lists like Adult Contemporary Singles.
