The story behind

Stupid Me, according to DoReSol

The song Stupid Me by Magic! has a rhythm that grabs you from the first measure. The bass sets the pulse with a relaxed yet firm groove, while the acoustic guitar and backing vocals give it that reggae-pop vibe they’re known for. What stands out is how the track plays with subtle shifts in dynamics: there’s a moment where everything reduces to just vocals and percussion, and suddenly it explodes into a chorus that invites you to move your feet without overthinking it. It’s not a song that demands complex technique to sound good, but it does require precision in the timing to make that balance between soft and energetic work.

The song was born at the same time Magic! was starting to make a name for themselves outside of Canada. In 2013, the band had already caught attention with Rude, their first single, which reached the top 10 in several countries. For Stupid Me, they worked with Sony Music Entertainment and Latium Entertainment, but the sound they were after was already clear: something fresh, unpretentious, yet catchy enough not to go unnoticed. The song ended up on Shakira’s self-titled album in 2014, on the track Cut Me Deep, giving them international exposure. While it wasn’t their biggest hit, it’s a great example of how that relaxed yet sticky style defined them during that phase.
