The story behind
Stuck in the Middle, according to DoReSol
Inner Circle recorded Stuck in the Middle in 1992, but it was in the reissue of their album Bad to the Bone —released the following year under the title Bad Boys— where this track found its most resonant moment. It wasn't the main song of the album, but it ended up standing out for a rhythm that catches on quickly: a bass that marks the beat clearly and a vocal melody that plays with sticky repetitions. The song did not appear in the international version of the album, only in the US edition, and that gave it a curious twist: it became an extra that ended up being more listened to than several of the tracks included in the original release.
The original recording of Bad to the Bone was made in Jamaica, but the version that includes Stuck in the Middle came a year later, when the label Big Beat Records re-released the material under the name Bad Boys. That title change was not just a detail: the album ended up being certified platinum in the United States, and Stuck in the Middle —with its 4:12 duration— ended up being one of the tracks most repeated on reggae radio stations of the time. It even won a Grammy Award in the category of Best Reggae Album, something not all songs from an album usually achieve on their own.
