The story behind
stay with me, according to DoReSol
The first time Stay with Me played on British radio, no one expected it to become the kind of song that sticks after a single listen. At just two and a half minutes long, the track achieves something few do: turning a simple melody into an inescapable hook. There are no unnecessary adornments, just a voice that cracks at the right moments and a rhythm that pulses like an accelerated heart. The magic lies in how the chorus repeats with an urgency that doesn’t sound forced, but rather like something that was already there, waiting to be told.
They recorded it in 2013, at a time when Sam Smith wasn’t sure if their voice would be enough to sustain a career. The song was born in a London hotel room, scribbled in haste between rehearsals and recording sessions. When it hit the market in May 2014, no one imagined it would top charts in over twenty countries, from the UK to New Zealand. In the United States, it reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100, and in 2015 it won a Grammy for "Song of the Year." But the most curious part is that, before all that, it had already been covered by Mary J. Blige in a remix that gave it another twist—more soul, more urgency. The song wasn’t trying to be a hit, but it ended up exactly that: a moment where music and feeling met without filters.
