The story behind
Spiral, according to DoReSol
The piece *Spiral* by John Coltrane, with a duration of 5:56, stands out for its structure and the energy emanating from the interaction between the musicians. It was composed by Coltrane himself and recorded on May 4, 1959, at Atlantic Studios in New York. In this session, Coltrane played the tenor saxophone, Tommy Flanagan handled the piano, Paul Chambers the bass, and Art Taylor the drums. The production of this recording was overseen by Nesuhi Ertegun.
This piece is part of the influential album *Giant Steps*, released in January 1960 by Atlantic Records. This record marked Coltrane's debut as a leader for the label, with whom he had signed a new contract the previous year. *Giant Steps* is considered a fundamental work in jazz history, and many of its compositions have become study material for saxophonists. In 2004, the Library of Congress of the United States selected this album, along with fifty other recordings, to be incorporated into the National Recording Registry. By 2018, the album had achieved gold record status, having sold 500,000 copies.
