The story behind
Sing, according to DoReSol
The song Sing by the Scottish band Travis stands out for its message of emotional release, inviting listeners to overcome relationship difficulties through music. Fran Healy, the lead vocalist, composed this melody in 1999, just before recording the B-sides of their single "Turn". The inspiration came while watching a swing video on MTV, which led him to create a melodic base he initially titled "Swing". However, upon realizing the song could address the healing power of singing, he decided to change the title to Sing.
In terms of its sound, the song is characterized by the prominent inclusion of the banjo, played by Andy Dunlop, which gives it a distinctive touch. The production was handled by Nigel Godrich, and the recording took place at Ocean Way Studios in Los Angeles between October 2000 and March 2001. Sing was released as the lead single from the album The Invisible Band on April 23, 2001, in the United States, and quickly became the band’s most successful single in the United Kingdom, reaching the third spot on the singles chart. It also performed notably in other countries, including second place in France and eighth in New Zealand.
The music video, directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, shows the band at a dinner that turns into a fun food fight, reflecting the carefree spirit of the song. This playful approach was replicated during their television appearances, such as on Top of the Pops, where band members threw pies at the audience. Additionally, Sing was dedicated by Healy to his wife, Nora Kryst, in the album’s liner notes, highlighting the personal connection behind the composition. Undoubtedly, this song is not only a testament to Travis’s talent but also a celebration of music as a means to heal and connect.
