The story behind
Seven Seas of Rhye…, according to DoReSol
The first time one encounters Seven Seas of Rhye…, it is likely to be as the closing track of Queen's first album. At just one minute and fifteen seconds, this piece, with music by Freddie Mercury, functions as a turning point, a preview of the audacity the band would display in the following years. It is not a conventional rock song; rather, it feels like a touch of fantasy, almost theatrical, evoking images of distant realms and epic narratives, a sonic prelude that leaves the listener intrigued.
The recording of this first album, simply titled Queen, took place in London, split between Trident Studios and De Lane Lea Music Centre. The process involved production by Roy Thomas Baker and John Anthony, as well as the involvement of the band members themselves. This debut album, released in 1973, already showed Queen's ambition to fuse styles, mixing the power of heavy metal with the structures of progressive rock and touches of folk. Freddie Mercury was the author of five of the tracks, while Brian May contributed four, including one co-written with Tim Staffell from the Smile era. Drummer Roger Taylor also contributed composition and vocals on Modern Times Rock and Roll.
