The story behind
The track Rat Salad, with its duration of 2 minutes and 30 seconds, emerges from the recording sessions for Black Sabbath's album Paranoid. This record, which saw the light of day in the United Kingdom in September 1970 and arrived in the United States in January 1971, became a landmark for the band. The recording of Paranoid was an accelerated process, similar to their previous work, completed in just a few days in June. The production of this album was handled by Rodger Bain, with sound engineering by Tom Allom and Brian Humphries.
Black Sabbath, originally from Birmingham and formed in 1968, laid the foundations of heavy metal. Initially known as Polka Tulk and later Earth, they evolved towards a darker sound, incorporating themes of occultism and horror, and tuning their guitars to lower pitches. The album Paranoid, which includes iconic songs like Iron Man and War Pigs, was fundamental to their career, achieving multiple platinum records and consolidating their influence in the genre.
