The story behind
Phantom Lord, according to DoReSol
When you dive into *Phantom Lord*, you encounter a story that evokes the battle of a mythical creature, a war cry that resonates in the heavy metal universe. The authors of the music, Dave Mustaine, James Hetfield, and Lars Ulrich, created a piece that, with its 5 minutes and 2 seconds duration, became an interesting starting point. What distinguishes this track is the inclusion of melodic and clean guitars, something that had not been explored before in Metallica's compositions. The lyrics, on the other hand, paint a picture of confrontation between metal beasts, and in the early concerts, the band used to dedicate it to those fans who gave themselves completely to the energy of the crowd, headbanging to the rhythm of the music.
This song has its roots in the band's early history. It was part of their first demo, titled No Life 'Til Leather. The song's name, in fact, holds a personal connection with James Hetfield, as one of his bands prior to Metallica was precisely called Phantom Lord. The recording featured engineering by Chris Bubacz and Andy Wroblewski, under the production of Paul Curcio and Jon Zazula. Years later, other thrash metal bands showed their appreciation for this track: Anthrax included a cover version as a B-side to their album Volume 8: The Threat Is Real in 1998, and the German band Destruction did the same on their album All Hell Breaks Loose in 2000.
