The story behind
Pela luz dos olhos teus, according to DoReSol
This song exists in less time than it takes to take a breath. Pela luz dos olhos teus unfolds in two minutes and three seconds, but in that time it manages to do something few pieces achieve: to stick like a flash in the memory. There are no adornments, no detours. Just a melody that moves forward with the naturalness of someone walking down an empty street at dawn, and lyrics that seem written on the fly but, upon listening, feel eternal.
The one who wrote it was no ordinary musician: Marcus Vinícius da Cruz de Melo Morais was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1913 and lived as a poet, diplomat, and composer. Among his most famous works is Garota de Ipanema, but this short and direct piece has another kind of magic. It was recorded at a time when bossanova was beginning to gain strength, though here there is no technical sophistication, but rather something simpler: the essence of a song born from everyday observation. He died in 1980, but his voice remains there, in those verses that speak of a light that illuminates everything.
