The story behind
Paddle Out, according to DoReSol
The magic of Paddle Out lies in its hypnotic rhythm and the bass that seems to float above everything else. It’s not just a short track — it’s an invitation to move before the first line even ends. The bass weaves a repeating pattern like a steady heartbeat, but with an unexpected twist in the measure that makes it feel more organic than mechanical. That’s the key: it doesn’t sound like a technical exercise, but like something that was born in the exact moment it was recorded.
They recorded it in Austin, Texas, over three intense months where the band’s energy blended with the chaos of their own lives. Bradley Nowell had been battling his addiction for years, but in those sessions, they weren’t chasing perfection: they wanted to capture the urgency of what they felt in that instant. Producer Michael "Miguel" Happoldt and engineer Eddie Ashworth let the sound breathe, without forcing corrections. That’s how Paddle Out came to be, with its precise 1:15 duration, as a fragment of something bigger than the song itself.
