The story behind

O pato, according to DoReSol

The song O Pato, with music by Jaime Silva and lyrics by Neuza Teixeira, was composed in the late 1940s. Although it was already part of the repertoire of Garotos da Lua from those years, it was João Gilberto's version that catapulted it to fame. This interpretation was included in his second album, O Amor, o Sorriso e a Flor, originally released in the United States in 1960 under the title Brazil's Brilliant João Gilberto, and later in Brazil in 1961. This record is considered fundamental in introducing bossa nova to the United States, and the song O Pato has become a reference point for the early days of this genre.

The recording of O Pato for the 1960 album was produced by Aloysio de Oliveira. The album O Amor, o Sorriso e a Flor, of which this song is part, has been recognized on multiple occasions, including its inclusion in the list of the 500 best albums in Brazilian music according to a 2022 poll. The song has been reinterpreted by a variety of artists, including Gilberto Gil, Elza Soares, Adriana Calcanhotto, Stan Getz, Charlie Byrd, and Jon Hendricks, demonstrating its reach and influence.
