The story behind

O barquinho, according to DoReSol

The history of O barquinho begins in the middle of an emergency at sea. In 1961, a group of musicians — including Roberto Menescal and Ronaldo Bôscoli — was sailing near Cabo Frio when the boat's engine shut off. While trying to restart it, the intermittent sound emitted by the equipment reminded them of a repeated syllable, almost like a rhythm. The moment of tension turned into inspiration: Menescal began humming that improvised beat, adapting it to a melodic pattern. Minutes later, a boat arriving from Bahia rescued them, and at that instant, the phrase that defines the song was born: "O barquinho vai / a tardinha cai." The next day, in the studio or at someone's home in the group, Bôscoli and Menescal worked on that idea until giving it its final form.

What's curious is that O barquinho was not born as a song intended for success, but as a reflection of an everyday moment. When it was released in the early 1960s, it became one of the emblems of bossa nova, the movement that simplified samba to make it accessible with just a guitar. The song has over three thousand versions worldwide, but its original version — by Menescal and Bôscoli — remains the one that best captures the blend of calm and rhythm that defines the genre. In 2009, Rolling Stone Brasil magazine included it among the 100 most important songs in Brazil, and in 2020, Japanese musicians recorded it in Portuguese as a tribute to its 60th anniversary. Even in 2026, Luísa Sonza and Menescal included it in the album Bossa Sempre Nova, proving that its melody continues to resonate decades later.
