The story behind
No Way No, according to DoReSol
The song No Way No by Magic! doesn’t go unnoticed: that sticky rhythm that hooks you from the first seconds is no coincidence. The Canadian reggae-pop band pulled off something few manage: a fresh sound that blends the warmth of roots reggae with straightforward pop, easy to hum but with enough substance to avoid tiring. The track lasts exactly 3 minutes and 52 seconds, just the right length to keep attention without dragging on. What’s curious is that, while the main riff seems simple, that small melodic twist at the end of each verse is what gives it its identity. If you play it, notice how the bass and guitar intertwine in a pattern that repeats, but with a nuance that subtly changes each time. It’s not a perfect loop, and that’s its charm: it sounds like music made by people who enjoy playing, not perfecting.
This song didn’t come out of nowhere. Magic! recorded it in 2013 as part of their first material, right after the success of their single Rude, which reached number two in Australia and New Zealand and number seven in Canada. The group, formed by Nasri Atweh (lead vocals and producer), Mark Pellizzer, Alex Tanas, and Ben Spivak, already knew they wanted a sound that was accessible yet rooted. No Way No later appeared on Shakira’s self-titled album —on the track Cut Me Deep— in March 2014, which opened doors to bigger collaborations. They signed with Sony Music Entertainment and worked with Latium Entertainment, but the detail that surprises most is that, amid all the production, the song’s essence remains the same as when they played it in their earliest rehearsals: unfiltered, unpretentious.
