The story behind

Ninja, according to DoReSol

The first time I heard Ninja, I was hooked by that opening riff, that interplay of notes that seems to hide between the folds of the song before exploding into the chorus. It’s not a track that stands out for its length—just three minutes and forty-seven seconds—but in that time it packs an energy that few cuts from 80s hard rock managed to match. The blend of clean and distorted guitars, along with that bass that sneaks in like a whisper before kicking in, gives it an almost cinematic feel, as if each note were telling a story of espionage or pursuit. It’s no coincidence the title fits so well: Ninja sounds like stealthy movement, like a track that advances without making a sound until it strikes suddenly.

Recorded between September 1985 and March 1986, Ninja emerged amid an itinerant production process. The musicians from Europe moved between four studios in three different countries: Zurich, Stockholm, Atlanta, and Berkeley, each with its own acoustics and technical challenges. The person responsible for tying it all together was Kevin Elson, a producer who had already worked with bands like Journey and Lynyrd Skynyrd, and who here applied an almost surgical approach to ensure the sound didn’t lose power despite the location changes. The final mix, handled by Wally Buck and Elson, reinforces that sense of precision: the instruments sound crisp, yet never cold, as if each layer had been fine-tuned by hand. The result was an album that, beyond its massive success, managed to capture a moment when European hard rock was aiming to sound bigger than ever.
