The story behind

Mysterious Ways, according to DoReSol

The song Mysterious Ways by U2 stands out for its uniqueness, beginning as an improvisation titled "Sick Puppy". In its early stages, the band focused on a bass created by Adam Clayton, which caught their attention, but they struggled to develop the rest of the composition. The key to the song taking shape came when guitarist The Edge began experimenting with a Korg A3 effects processor, which brought a fresh sound and a danceable rhythm. The combination of a funky guitar line, conga percussion, and Bono’s mystical lyrics about love and women gave the song a distinctive character that resonated with audiences.

Recorded between 1990 and 1991 in various studios, including Hansa in Berlin, the creation of Mysterious Ways was marked by creative tensions. During one of the sessions, Bono and producer Daniel Lanois had an intense disagreement about the song’s direction, creating a tense atmosphere. However, this creative struggle also sparked inspiration for another of their iconic songs, One, which emerged from an improvisational moment while working on Mysterious Ways. The track was released as the second single from the album Achtung Baby on December 2, 1991, and quickly achieved chart success, reaching number one in Ireland and standing out in several other countries. Its video, filmed in Morocco, incorporated images of a belly dancer, complementing the song’s enigmatic atmosphere. Since its debut on the Zoo TV Tour in 1992, Mysterious Ways has remained a fan favorite at U2 concerts, showcasing the band’s evolution and adaptability over the years.
