The story behind
More Than Words, according to DoReSol
The song More Than Words by Extreme stands out for its emotional depth and acoustic focus, distancing itself from the funk metal style that characterized the band. This ballad, composed by Gary Cherone and Nuno Bettencourt, invites reflection on the importance of actions in love, suggesting that words alone can become empty. Bettencourt has mentioned that the song serves as a warning against the trivialization of the phrase "I love you," emphasizing that sometimes it is necessary to demonstrate those feelings in more tangible ways.
The recording process of More Than Words was a challenge for the band. Despite the record label, A&M Records, initially hesitating to release it as a single, Bettencourt and his bandmates fought for its publication, even to the point where he temporarily left the band over this disagreement. Ultimately, the song was released on March 12, 1991, as the third single from their second album, Pornograffitti, and quickly became a hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and in other countries like Belgium, Canada, and New Zealand.
The music video, directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, complements the song's simplicity, which relies on an acoustic guitar and the vocal harmonies of the two musicians. Over time, More Than Words became a classic, though the band eventually grew resentful toward it, as the label "the boys of More Than Words" did not reflect their full musical diversity. However, Cherone has acknowledged that this song opened many doors for them, allowing them to embark on international tours and explore their creativity in future projects.
