The story behind
Mona Lisa, according to DoReSol
The song Mona Lisa stands out for its connection between love and Leonardo da Vinci’s famous artwork. Written by Ray Evans and Jay Livingston for the film Captain Carey, U.S.A. in 1949, the melody evokes the same enigmatic smile that characterizes the portrait. The piece won the Oscar for Best Original Song in 1950, which catapulted it to fame, especially in the interpretation by Nat King Cole, who recorded it as the B-side of another single. His version became a phenomenon, reaching the number one spot on the Billboard chart for eight weeks.
The original orchestration was conducted by Nelson Riddle, and Cole’s recording took place at Capitol’s Hollywood studio. Interestingly, early advertisements for the song did not mention its title, making its success unexpected. In an interview, Livingston recalled how, after a promotional tour, the track became popular thanks to its performances on multiple radio programs. Cole’s version not only elevated him to a new status as a vocalist but also left a lasting mark on music history, being recognized in 1992 with its induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
Over the years, Mona Lisa has been reinterpreted by numerous artists, from Elvis Presley to Natalie Cole, each bringing their unique style to this beautiful composition. The song has transcended generations, maintaining its relevance and charm, which makes it an essential piece for any musician looking to explore the rich history of popular music.
