The story behind
Modern Times Rock ’n’ Roll, according to DoReSol
To understand Modern Times Rock ’n’ Roll, one must know that it was Roger Taylor who took the reins of this song, both in its composition and vocal performance. It’s a track that was recorded at a time when the band was still defining its sound, and that raw energy is evident. The sessions took place at Trident Studios and De Lane Lea Music Centre in London, with production by Roy Thomas Baker, John Anthony, and the members of Queen themselves. The full album, which includes this piece, was released in July 1973 in the UK by EMI Records, and a couple of months later, in September 1973, it reached the United States under the Elektra Records label.
This debut work by Queen, released in 1973, is an interesting blend of styles. It combines the power of heavy metal with the structures of progressive rock, but one can also detect folk influences. The lyrics explore diverse themes, ranging from folklore in My Fairy King to religious themes in Jesus. Freddie Mercury contributed five of the ten compositions on the album, while Brian May contributed four, one of which, Doing All Right, was co-written with Tim Staffell when they were both part of the band Smile. Modern Times Rock ’n’ Roll, for its part, showcases Roger Taylor’s versatility within the group.
