The story behind

Marcha da quarta-feira de cinzas, according to DoReSol

The Marcha da quarta-feira de cinzas, created in 1963, presents a soundscape that departs from the usual lightness of bossa nova. Its atmosphere is more introspective, almost somber, and over time, many interpreted it as a premonition of the reality looming over Brazil. When the lyrics mention that "our carnival is over" and that "no one plays happily anymore," leaving only "nostalgia and ashes," it resonates with the imposition of the Atos Institucionais that would mark a new political direction. The composer Carlos Lyra, one of its creators, recalled how Vinícius de Moraes, with his sharp poetic intuition, captured the sense of an imminent change and the end of a vibrant era, evoking a "marcha rancho" with a melancholic tone reminiscent of funeral ceremonies.

Despite its apparent desolation, the song also carries a message of perseverance, inviting listeners to "sing in any way possible," which for many became a call to resistance. Carlos Lyra noted that this phrase led many to believe the piece was a direct response to the political events of the time. This work emerged during the early stage of the Centro Popular de Cultura (CPC), where both Lyra and Vinícius incorporated nationalist and political themes into their repertoire. The earliest known recording of this piece dates to February 1963, performed by Jorge Goulart, and that same year, Carlos Lyra included it on his album Depois do Carnaval - O sambalanço de Carlos Lyra, though it appeared there under the title Depois do Carnaval. The poet and diplomat Marcus Vinícius da Cruz de Melo Morais, globally renowned for the lyrics of Garota de Ipanema, was the author of the words for this march.
