The story behind

Muddy Waters recorded “Mannish Boy” in Chicago on May 24, 1955. The song became a blues classic, with a repetitive structure and a voice that carries the weight of history. The lyrics, with phrases like “I’m a man, spell M, a child, N”, were not just wordplay, but a way of saying that blacks were not called “men” in the South, but “children”. It was a way of claiming their identity. The recording included Jimmy Rogers on guitar, Fred Below on drums and a female chorus. Little Walter was not there, as he was on tour. Muddy Waters recorded «Mannish Boy» in 1955, and it wasn't a coincidence. The song was put together as a sort of challenge, a response to «I'm a Man», by Bo Diddley. And that Diddley song, in turn, had roots in «Hoochie Coochie Man», by Waters and Willie Dixon. What remains is a rhythm that moves on a fixed chord, as if time stopped and stayed there, repeated and solid.
