The story behind
Looking for a Better Way, according to DoReSol
The rhythm of Looking for a Better Way is built on a groove that never stays still. It's not your typical reggae, but rather a blend where the genre's classics mix with a livelier, almost danceable vibe, distancing it from the more laid-back feel of other tracks on Bad to the Bone. The rhythmic foundation relies on a repetitive pattern with an unexpected twist: the bass and horns weave a game of tensions that invites you to tap your feet without losing the essence of reggae. It's one of those songs that, upon hearing it, you feel you're in front of something fresh, even if the style isn't new.
This track is part of an album the band recorded in two distinct versions: one for the international market and another for the United States, released in 1992. A year later, the U.S. version—reissued as Bad Boys—won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album and became their most successful record, surpassing one million copies sold. Looking for a Better Way appears only on the U.S. edition, alongside other tracks like Make U Sweat or Shock Out (Hawaiian Style), which give the collection a more experimental edge. The production was handled by Bernard “Touter” Harvey, Ian Lewis, and Roger Lewis, who also arranged the music, achieving a sound that balances tradition and modernity.
