The story behind
The song Lions, with its 5 minutes and 3 seconds duration, emerges from a particular moment in the gestation of Dire Straits. The band's self-titled debut album, released in 1978, was built from demos they financed themselves. This work contained almost all the repertoire they handled at the time. Tracks like "Move It Away", "Real Girl", and "Me & My Friends" were left out, as was a rendition of "Nadine", a classic by Chuck Berry.
During the promotion of this first record, the group used to perform What's The Matter, Baby?, a piece co-written by Mark Knopfler and his brother David Knopfler, which would later appear on the 1995 album Live at the BBC. The image adorning the debut album's cover was taken from a painting by Chuck Loyola. The recording of this album featured engineering by Rhett Davies and production by Muff Winwood.
