The story behind

Kite, according to DoReSol

The song Kite by U2 stands out for its emotional personal connection and its evocative sound. The story behind the composition dates back to a day at Killiney Hill, where Bono tried to fly a kite with his daughters, Jordan and Eve. However, the activity turned chaotic when the kite crashed, and the girls asked to go home to play with their Tamagotchis. This event became a metaphor about losing control and the inevitability of his daughters growing up and becoming independent. The lyrics, co-written by Bono and The Edge, reflect Bono’s internal struggle in accepting that a time will come when he will no longer be needed for them. The Edge, while helping with the lyrics, also saw a deeper underlying theme related to Bono’s relationship with his father, Bob Hewson, who was battling cancer at the time.

Musically, Kite is equally captivating. It begins with a string loop that The Edge had created, and its verses feature a simple yet effective slide guitar riff. The chorus soars with Bono’s powerful vocal performance, contrasting with The Edge’s more intense guitar lines. An interesting feature is the coda included at the end, which is sometimes repeated in concerts, where the instrumentation is stripped down, allowing Bono’s voice to resonate with greater clarity. This moment aims to anchor the song’s narrative, marking a specific instant and then letting it go.

The recording process took place at Hanover Quay Studios in late 1998, where U2 collaborated with producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. During those sessions, though few brilliant ideas emerged, The Edge introduced his string loop that inspired the creation of Kite. Bono, in a moment of vocal revelation, surprised his bandmates by hitting a high note, which was considered a "memorable moment" by bassist Adam Clayton. The song was released on October 30, 2000, as part of the album All That You Can’t Leave Behind, and has resonated deeply with listeners, who have found in it various interpretations about relationships and the struggle to let go.
