The story behind
In a Little While, according to DoReSol
“In a Little While” is a piece that stands out for its intimate atmosphere and emotional connection. Although it was not released as a single, it resonated on adult alternative radio stations in the United States, reaching the top spot on the Billboard Triple-A chart in March 2002. The song emerged during the recording sessions for the album All That You Can't Leave Behind in the year 2000, and its title comes from a line that co-producer Brian Eno had been exploring without prior success. The recording was done quite spontaneously, with Bono arriving at the studio with an affected voice after a long night. His performance was a mix of improvisation that captured the essence of the moment.
The song’s sound was built around an organic approach, where The Edge achieved a clean tone by connecting his Fender Stratocaster guitar directly to a Fender Bassman amplifier. However, after completing the first version, the band felt it lacked originality. They therefore took the song to Windmill Lane Studios, where Richard Stannard stripped it of unnecessary layers and added a loop to Larry Mullen Jr.’s drums, helping to solidify its structure and validate its renewed compositional approach.
The lyrics are directed at Ali Hewson, Bono’s wife, and reflect a blend of nostalgia and humor, addressing themes like the passage of time and the simplicity of memories. Throughout the song, there is a lyrical moment that evokes awe for technological advancements and frustration with persistent global issues. This duality between the personal and the philosophical gives it a special depth.
During the Elevation Tour, the song had a notable presence in the setlist, and Bono dedicated it to Joey Ramone, who listened to it on his deathbed, turning it into a gospel hymn in his memory. This emotional connection has made “In a Little While” resonate in the hearts of many, becoming one of the favorites in live performances. On the U2 360° Tour, it even included a special moment where Belgian astronaut Frank DeWinne read the lyrics from the International Space Station. The song, with its mix of improvisation and lyrical depth, remains a testament to U2’s talent and evolution.
