The story behind
Iberia sumergida, according to DoReSol
When you dive into Iberia Sumergida, the first thing that catches your attention is that unmistakable introduction, a harmonica sound that Enrique Bunbury himself contributed. It’s a detail that defines the identity of this track, part of the album Avalancha, released in 1995. The song stands out for its lyrics, which Bunbury wrote during a moment of reflection on Spain’s situation, using "Iberia" as a metaphor for the country and "sumergida" to describe its state. It tackles themes like complacency, political issues, and economic struggles, all wrapped in the metaphors typical of his compositions. Musically, the track follows the album’s style, with polished production and a strong emphasis on guitars, giving Avalancha a sound closer to classic rock.
Iberia Sumergida had a remarkable journey on the charts. It was the first single from Avalancha and, in fact, achieved something rare: reaching the top spot on the Los 40 Principales chart twice in 1995. The music video that accompanied the song, produced by Factoría Clip, was awarded a Premio Ondas that same year. This audiovisual work, which recreated a cave-like environment with surprising elements, was also highlighted by MTV Latinoamérica as one of the 100 most important clips aired between 1993 and 2003, later included in a special featuring 150 videos. Over the years, Iberia Sumergida has been featured in various compilations and live recordings, such as Parasiempre (1996) and The Platinum Collection (2006), keeping its place in Héroes del Silencio’s repertoire.
