The story behind

When Ed Sheeran received the call to compose a song for *The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug*, he already had a personal connection to the work. His father had read him J.R.R. Tolkien's book as a child, and he himself had devoured it. The proposal came from Peter Jackson, the film's director, who learned of Sheeran's interest in his cinema through his daughter Katie. After a chance encounter, Jackson asked him to join the project. Sheeran accepted and, traveling from London, arrived in Wellington, New Zealand, in less than 48 hours.

The experience of creating "I See Fire" was intense and fast. Sheeran saw the film at an early screening and, following Jackson's instruction to focus on the last ten minutes to reflect the transition back to reality, he began to write. Looking for a sound that would fit the atmosphere of the saga, he leaned towards folk, even though his style often deviates from that genre. Most strikingly, the majority of the song, including the production and the performance of almost all instruments, was recorded in a single day. He even learned to play the violin for the occasion, and the cello was provided by Nigel Collins, who was collaborating on the film's main soundtrack. The final mix was handled by Pete Cobbin at Abbey Road Studios, with Jackson present. The song was released as a digital download on November 5, 2013, the same day as its music video. It reached number 13 on the UK singles chart and, in its sixth week, reached number one in New Zealand, marking a milestone in his career. Furthermore, it was nominated for a Satellite Award in the category of Best Original Song.
