The story behind
I Got Stung, according to DoReSol
The first time you listen to I Got Stung, you’re left with the feeling that time speeds up. In less than two minutes, Elvis Presley unleashes an energy that never lets up: his voice races along at a dizzying pace, as if the singer himself can barely contain it, while the instruments — Floyd Cramer’s piano and Hank Garland’s guitar — move in sync with that urgency. It’s not just speed that defines the track, but the playful mix of fun and mischief in the lyrics, where the narrator boasts of a crush that left him "stung" like an insect. The hook lies in that contrast: a song that sounds like a party but with a cheeky wink that made it unique in its time.
It was recorded on June 11, 1958, at RCA Studios in Nashville, just as Elvis was about to ship out to Germany with the Army. It was the last track he laid down before closing out the decade, and it hit the market on October 21 of that same year as the "A" side alongside One Night. In the United States, it reached number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100, but in the United Kingdom, it became a smash hit: number 1 for three weeks in 1959 and again in 2005, this time as a double-A-side re-release with the same track. Strangely, it appeared on the 1959 compilation 50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can't Be Wrong, where it stood out as one of those short but unforgettable pieces that defined his sound in the '50s.
