The story behind
Hole Hearted, according to DoReSol
The song Hole Hearted by the band Extreme stands out for its captivating melody and uniqueness within the album Pornograffiti. Released in September 1991, it became the fourth and final single from the album, reaching the fourth position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States. Its closing with the sound of a storm is an interesting nod, as it subtly connects with the beginning of the song "Decadence Dance", which opens the same album. This sonic detail not only creates a cohesive atmosphere but also highlights the band's creative production skills.
What is curious about Hole Hearted is its origin. Nuno Bettencourt, the guitarist, received a twelve-string guitar just as the album was nearly finished. The excitement led him to improvise the opening chords in the bathroom, where, surprisingly, he composed much of the song. Bettencourt drew inspiration from the acoustic sound of Led Zeppelin III, resulting in a fusion of rock and melody that makes it stand out. Although it did not receive the same level of attention as "More Than Words", many consider this song one of the most memorable on the album. With a duration of 3:39, its pop rock style and ambiguous lyrics have allowed for multiple interpretations, ranging from a romantic ballad to a deeper reflection.
