The story behind
Hey Love, according to DoReSol
This version of Hey Love isn’t just another track on the Bad to the Bone album: it sounds like reggae with an unexpected twist. The rhythm shifts between classic and modern, with a bassline that weaves into the melodic hook and percussion that never lets go. It’s not a straight loop but something that breathes differently, as if each note has its own space to shine. The 4:22 runtime gives it just enough time to avoid feeling too short or dragged out, instead offering a groove that invites movement.
They recorded it in 1992 with Bernard “Touter” Harvey, Ian Lewis, and Roger Lewis handling the arrangements and production. The song appeared on the international edition of Bad to the Bone, but its most well-known version came the following year with the album’s re-release as Bad Boys, which went on to win the Grammy for Best Reggae Album in 1993. It wasn’t just music to dance to: it was a sound that slipped into radios and stayed, blending tradition with fresh touches. The mix of classic reggae and the Lewis brothers’ arrangements gave it a distinct character, one that’s clear from the first few bars.
