The story behind

There's something in the air of Estudiante that grabs you from the first chords. It's not just the catchy melody or the rhythm that invites you to move your feet: it's that blend of nostalgia and tenderness that Gardel managed to turn into sound. The song tells the story of a young man leaving behind his student life to chase a dream, and he does so with such naturalness that it makes you feel anyone could be that character. The theme doesn't sound like a history lesson or a moral speech, but like an intimate confession shared in a café in Buenos Aires at three in the afternoon.

The recording of Estudiante wasn't a mere formality in the studio. Gardel took it to the record in 1935, the same year his voice faded forever in an accident in Medellín. There are no records of long recording sessions or complicated arrangements: the song flows as if Gardel had sung it in one take, with the confidence that only years of experience can provide. What's curious is that, decades later, Unesco decided to include his voice in the Memory of the World program, acknowledging that he wasn't just an artist, but a piece of culture that transcended borders. And although the debate about his birthplace — Toulouse or Tacuarembó — remains open, what no one disputes is that his childhood in Buenos Aires shaped that unique style we instantly recognize today.
