The story behind
The album Escape, released on July 17, 1981, marked a peak for the band Journey. This work became the first to feature keyboardist Jonathan Cain and quickly climbed to the top of the Billboard 200 chart in the United States. Four singles were released from this album that achieved great popularity on the Billboard Hot 100: Don't Stop Believin', which reached number 9; Who's Crying Now, number 4; Still They Ride, number 19; and Open Arms, which reached second place. Additionally, Stone in Love became a recurring track on rock radio stations. In July 2021, Escape was certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) after selling over ten million copies in the U.S., positioning it as Journey's most successful studio album and second overall in their discography, surpassed only by Greatest Hits. This album was the fifth best-selling of 1981, coming in just behind Stevie Nicks' Bella Donna.
Interestingly, the song Escape was conceived to accompany a namesake video game developed by Data Age for the Atari 2600 console and released in 1982. Although the game is titled Journey Escape and is based on the band, the song Escape itself does not appear within the game. The introductory melody of the video game is, in fact, a snippet of Don't Stop Believin', another hit from the same album. The music that plays within the game appears to be an original composition, not directly inspired by any Journey song. The recording of Escape involved the work of Wally Buck and Kevin Elson as recording engineers, and the production was handled by Kevin Elson and Mike Stone. The total duration of the piece is 5:17.
