The story behind

Dancing Girls, according to DoReSol

The song Dancing Girls by Nik Kershaw stands out for its vibrant energy and its focus on seeking excitement amid monotony. The lyrics tell the story of a man who, despite having a job, feels trapped in daily routine and longs for something thrilling in his life. In a moment of desperation, he calls for the arrival of the "dancing girls," symbolizing a desire for change and fun. This contrast between everyday life and the yearning for something more passionate becomes the core of the song, which, according to Kershaw, is an exaggeration of that feeling of boredom.

The creation process of Dancing Girls was quite spontaneous. In an interview, Kershaw recalled how he composed the bassline using a Roland Juno-6 synthesizer and programmed a rhythm on a Roland TR-808 drum machine. This musical foundation was key to the development of the lyrics, which were written afterward. The recording took place during the summer of 1983, and the single was released on April 2, 1984, reaching number 13 on the UK Singles Chart, where it remained for nine weeks.

The music video for Dancing Girls was filmed in a section of Woodberry Grove, in Finchley, north London, and features Kershaw as an advertising executive who imagines dancing with a group of middle-aged dancers, including a tall traffic warden, creating a humorous visual contrast with his own height of 1.60 meters. This lighthearted approach was a response to the darker tone of the video for his previous single, Wouldn't It Be Good. The song, with its synth-pop style, captures the essence of an era and has been recognized as a great example of the British sound of the 1980s.
