The story behind
The final track on the album Master of Puppets, Damage, Inc., closes the record with a raw energy that aligns with the themes of devastation and aggression running through the work. What's interesting about this song is that it's the only one on the entirety of Master of Puppets to feature explicit language, marking a distinct closing point. Furthermore, it is the last track on which all four original band members, during the Burton-Hammett era, share songwriting credit. The music was conceived by Cliff Burton, James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, and Lars Ulrich, and its duration is 5 minutes and 8 seconds.
The recording of Master of Puppets took place in Copenhagen, Denmark, at Sweet Silence Studios, under the production of Flemming Rasmussen. This album, released on March 3, 1986, by Elektra Records, is notable for being the last to feature bassist Cliff Burton. Tragically, Burton passed away on September 27, 1986, following a band bus accident while on tour, in Dörarp, Sweden. The song's mixing was handled by Michael Wagener. The album's artwork, a collaboration between Metallica and Peter Mensch, with painting by Don Brautigam, depicts a field of white crosses connected by strings, manipulated by hands in a blood-red sky with an orange glow on the horizon. This album is the band's most recent to date to have a total running time under an hour.
