Dalla, originally from Bologna and who passed away in Montreux in 2012, demonstrated remarkable musical evolution throughout his career, moving from his beginnings in the beat scene to rhythmic experimentation and singer-songwriter style, even exploring the limits of Italian lyrics and melody.
His musical training was nourished by jazz, and in a later stage of his career, he dedicated himself to writing the lyrics for his own compositions. As an instrumentalist, he mastered the clarinet and saxophone, and occasionally worked as a keyboardist. He took his first steps in music at a very young age as a clarinetist in a jazz ensemble in Rome. At that time, he also cultivated the study of James Brown's vocal style, adopting a deliberately dissonant and rough use of the voice, with a jazzy inclination to embellish vocal melodic lines with unexpected variations that challenged the musical conventions of the time. It was Gino Paoli who discovered him and encouraged him to embark on a solo career.
