The story behind

Billie Holiday recorded All of Me at a time when her voice was no longer the same. The 1958 album Lady in Satin sounds as if time had carved each note with rough hands: the breathing between phrases is slower, the words drag with a heaviness that is not clumsiness, but the weight of lived experience. This song, clocking in at just two and a half minutes, is not an exercise in vocal virtuosity, but a confession where the voice breaks without apology.
