Lucio Battisti wrote Al cinema as part of the album Una donna per amico, released in December 1978. The song was recorded in studios in Oxfordshire and London, with producer Geoff Westley and session musicians. All the verses were written by Mogol, while Battisti composed the music. The song lasts four minutes and thirty-six seconds. In the list of the 100 best Italian albums of all time, published by the Italian edition of Rolling Stone in 2012, the album placed third. In 1978 it was the fourth best-selling album in Italy.
