The story behind
This piece, A Virgem de Macarena, with its 2:54 duration, presents us with a young Elis Regina at an early moment in her career, showing remarkable vocal confidence and mastery. The album it is included in, Ellis Regina, released in 1963, was her third studio work and featured orchestral direction by Luiz Astor da Silva. Much of Regina's distinctive sound in the samba and Brazilian popular music of the era is attributed to Astor Silva, who was also the principal director of Columbia Brasileira and, during the same period, was promoting the first releases of Roberto Carlos.
The recording of Ellis Regina, and therefore of A Virgem de Macarena, benefited from Astor Silva's vision, who contributed his experience as an arranger. Elis Regina Carvalho Costa, born in Porto Alegre in 1945, would become a central figure in MPB. Although her life ended prematurely in 1982, her legacy is undeniable, being considered by many in the Brazilian music scene as one of the country's most outstanding voices. The way she approached the genre, with that confidence and vibrant control of her voice, is something clearly perceived in this track.
