Sarah Vaughan

When you listen to Sarah Vaughan, you encounter a voice that moves with a freedom and richness of nuances that captivates you. She is described as the possessor of one of the most wonderful voices of the 20th century, and it's easy to understand why. Her way of interpreting, with that fluidity and that ability to play with melodies, made her stand out enormously in the jazz scene. She wasn't just a singer; her connection with music was deep, and that was felt in every note.

Her path in music began in a way very connected to her surroundings. Born in Newark, New Jersey, she grew up in a home where music was present, as her father played the guitar and piano, and her mother sang in the church choir. From a very young age, Sarah began taking piano lessons and singing in the church, which laid the foundations for her musical ear. The music scene in Newark in the 1930s, with local bands and tours, fascinated her, and soon she ventured into the city's nightclubs, first as a pianist and later as a vocalist.

More about Sarah Vaughan

Biography

A key moment in her career was her appearance at the famous Apollo Theater Amateur Night in New York. In the fall of 1942, encouraged by a friend, Sarah first accompanied on piano the competitor, and then decided to perform herself. She sang the song Body and Soul and won, which opened the doors to a week of performances at the same theater. It was during that week that she met the bandleader Earl Hines, although the exact details of how they met vary. What is certain is that Billy Eckstine, who was singing with Hines at the time, also played an important role, and Sarah ended up joining Earl Hines' band in April 1943. That band is remembered today as a breeding ground for what would become bebop, featuring musicians like Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker.
