RAYE

Raye crafts her sound between jazz, soul, and pop, yet she never settles into a single style. Her songs often move between layers of production that feel handmade — as if each note breathes — and lyrics that speak of the everyday with an honesty that needs no embellishment. It’s not music to dance to mindlessly, but to feel every word, even when the rhythm pushes forward. The piano is usually her anchor, but she uses it as a bridge between the intimate and the expansive, as if whispering a secret aloud.

Her breakthrough didn’t come with an album, but with collaborations that put her on the radar without trying. In 2016, her voice on By Your Side by Jonas Blue and on You Don’t Know Me by Jax Jones slipped into British radios until, suddenly, everyone knew who she was. But the real turning point came when Polydor refused to release her debut album. Instead of giving in, she walked away: in 2022, she signed with Human Re Sources and, a year later, released My 21st Century Blues on her own terms, unfiltered. The album didn’t just give her first UK number one with Escapism; it proved that sometimes, independence is the best producer.

More about RAYE

Biography

What’s most striking about her music is how it balances the personal and the universal. My 21st Century Blues doesn’t sound like a debut album: it has the maturity of someone who already knows what they want to say and how to say it. Tracks like Secrets — with Regard — or Prada — with Cassö and D-Block Europe — showcase her ability to move between genres without losing her essence. And when Escapism topped the charts, it wasn’t just because of its catchy rhythm, but because, for the first time, many listeners heard something in her that resonated deeply. Her second album, This Music May Contain Hope, confirmed it wasn’t a fluke: with Where Is My Husband!, she once again led the UK charts and crossed the Atlantic with force.

Yet Raye’s brilliance isn’t limited to her solo work. Behind the scenes, she’s written for other big names: from Beyoncé to Little Mix, including Charli XCX and Ellie Goulding. In 2024, she became the first woman to win the Brit Award for Songwriter of the Year, and her seven Brits and two Ivor Novellos aren’t hollow trophies: they’re proof that when an artist knows exactly what they want, the rest of the world eventually follows.
