Raye crafts her sound between jazz, soul, and pop, yet she never settles into a single style. Her breakthrough didn’t come with an album, but with collaborations that put her on the radar without trying. In 2016, her voice on By Your Side by Jonas Blue and on You Don’t Know Me by Jax Jones slipped into British radios until, suddenly, everyone knew who she was. But the real turning point came when Polydor refused to release her debut album. Instead of giving in, she walked away: in 2022, she signed with Human Re Sources and, a year later, released My 21st Century Blues on her own terms, unfiltered. The album didn’t just give her first UK number one with Escapism; it proved that sometimes, independence is the best producer.
