Pablo Benegas

If you listen to La Oreja de Van Gogh and are left with the clean sound of the guitars, that melodic air that envelops the vocals, it's very likely that you're hearing the work of Pablo Benegas. He's not just the guitarist who held the rhythmic foundation of the group since its formation in 1996, but the one who shaped much of its sonic essence: the riffs that stick in the memory, the progressions that seem inevitable, and that way of building songs where the melody flows effortlessly. His guitar isn't just an accompaniment; it's another character in each track, something that's noticeable even in albums where he isn't the lead vocalist but remains the thread that holds the pieces together.

In October 2025, when the group announced a reunion tour with the original vocalist, Amaia Montero, Benegas made it clear he wouldn't participate in that phase. It wasn't a definitive farewell, but a gesture that marked a key moment: after decades at the forefront, he decided to step back from what was once his most visible project. That said, he didn't abandon the music world—far from it; he simply shifted his focus, leaving behind the massive stage to explore other creative paths.

More about Pablo Benegas

Biography

Before La Oreja de Van Gogh, he had already begun moving in the world of music. His first steps were with classical guitar, but it was during his teenage years that he found in the instrument more than just a hobby: a way to express what he carried inside. He wasn't seeking fame or recognition, but rather a connection with what he felt. That search, which would later be reflected in the lyrics and melodies of the group, arose from a personal need, not a professional plan. When La Oreja de Van Gogh burst onto the scene in the late 90s, his guitar style became a hallmark, something that set them apart from other pop bands of the era.

Beyond the stages, Benegas also explored other creative territories. He directed a short film, La promesa, in which his wife, Eider Ayuso, even participated. It wasn't a massive project, but it was a reflection of that curiosity that drives him to move between disciplines. And while his name will forever be associated with La Oreja de Van Gogh, his story as a musician doesn't end there: there are other facets, other sounds, other ways of understanding music that are still waiting for their moment.
